Chapter 15: The First Cost
"Bernadette," Shanna said. "It's nine at night."
"Forty thousand dollars," said the gentle voice, and I heard paper slide across a counter. "The foundation will call it a speaking fee."
"I didn't ask for a fee."
"You'll accept the Twelve Years Award in five weeks and thank my son's family."
"You'll say you carried two children into the light, and you'll cry at the right moment."
"And the test?"
"Tests are paper, dear. Paper can be argued for years."
I heard Shanna breathe in.
"Griffin has never once spoken against me," Bernadette said. "He will read the toast I write him, and he will sit down."
The envelope was taken.
I heard that, too, a soft dry sound.
The door closed, and I sat in the gas station lot with my knuckles white around the phone.
At 9:14 a text arrived from Dylan.
I got every word.
Griffin's message came at six the next morning.
