Chapter 26: What Fon Knew
They carried her to the herb woman's house in the lower town.
It was two streets from the west market and it had a green door and no sign over it.
The herb woman was seventy and she had known Ton since he was a boy, back when he came with his mother carrying ginger in a basket.
She took one look at Fon and cleared the table and had them lay her down on it.
She worked for an hour without saying much.
She got water into her, a spoonful at a time, holding her head up with one hand.
She put a poultice on her chest and another behind her neck and wrapped them with cloth.
She made a tea out of three roots and got half of it down her and the rest down the front of her blouse.
Then she sat back on her heels and wiped her hands.
"The fever's in the lungs," she said.
