Chapter 15: The Seating Chart

The video had forty thousand views by the time Phoebe and I crossed the quad.

Two girls stopped talking when we passed.

A boy said "Get help, Cora" in a friendly voice, and Phoebe turned all the way around.

"Do not," I said, and took her sleeve.

"I'm only going to memorize his face."

"You can memorize it from here."

At dawn, on her couch, I had told her what was in Kendra's shoebox, and she had only said "Okay" and put the kettle on.

I had Micah's cloth handkerchief in my coat pocket, folded in a square.

I kept my hand on it all the way to the Union.

"The gala committee meets at ten in the Oak Room," Phoebe said. "Seven students and an advisor. Brady chairs it. Kendra runs the seating and calls the cues."

"Then she'll be there."

"Good." Phoebe hitched up her tote. "I've been waiting to be rude to someone with a clipboard."

The Oak Room had a long table, a coffee urn and a whiteboard with a seating chart drawn on it in Kendra's round handwriting.

Seven faces turned toward us.

Brady's chair at the head was empty.

Kendra sat to the right of it with a clipboard on her knee and no makeup on.

Her eyes were red.

She looked at me once and then at the clipboard.

I looked at her until she looked up again, because I wanted her to know that I would not be the one to leave.

The advisor, a tired woman with a lanyard, cleared her throat.

"Ms. Stockton. Ms. Bellinger. We have a full agenda."

"We have one item," Phoebe said.

She set her canvas tote on the table and took out an envelope with a heavy cream letterhead.

"My uncle is sponsoring the arts wing ribbon-cutting at the gala. He is also, as of Saturday, the biggest donor at the dinner. He has asked me to convey his terms."
