Chapter 10: Two Wheels
Carlton came around the corner of the service corridor just as Margo let go of my wrist.
He stopped, looked at her, and put himself between us without a word.
"Don't," Margo said, holding up both hands. "I'm not here to hurt anyone. I'm done."
"You put a necklace in her bag," Carlton said.
"I know."
"In front of two hundred people."
"I know! Auntie told me to. She said it would be a joke, that she'd take it back as soon as she got what she wanted. She said nobody would call the police."
"What did she want?"
Margo wiped her face with the heel of her hand.
"She wants to find out who Millie is," she said.
I felt the hallway go cold.
"I'm Millie Pennock," I said. "Freelance bookkeeper. Echo Park."
"That's what the file says." Margo shook her head. "She hired a man in March, before you even met Carlton. She says no girl is that cheap. She says somebody who turns down a million dollars must have a bigger plan, or a bigger secret. She wants it, whichever it is."
"A million dollars?"
Carlton turned his head slowly and looked at me.
"He offered a million dollars?" he said.
"On the pickleball court. I said no."
"Twice," Margo said. "Your father told Vera everything the same night."
"He tells Vera everything," Carlton said, to the ceiling. "That's how she runs the house."
"What do you want, Margo?" I said.
"I want out." She sounded about twelve years old. "She owns my apartment lease. My car loan. She co-signed every card I have. If I walk away, I lose all of it."
