Chapter 13: What I Was To You

Carlton stood up so fast his chair fell over behind him.

He didn't look at me.

He picked up the folder, closed it, and set it down in front of Vera.

"Enjoy your evening," he said, and walked out through the service door.

The room made a noise.

"Carlton!" Harold called.

The door swung shut.

Vera dabbed the corner of her eye with a napkin that was perfectly dry.

"Poor boy," she said. "Millie, dear, we'll want to ask you some questions about the Pennock shares and your intentions toward this family."

I stood up.

My knees worked, which surprised me.

"You can ask my grandmother," I said. "She's outside, and she's been standing in the cold for about four minutes, which she'll mention."

"Millie," Harold said, quietly, from the head of the table. "Go."

I went.

The lobby of the Rainsford Grand was all marble and orchids, and the doorman held the glass door open for me with a face of pure terror.

A black town car idled at the curb.

Next to it, in a gray cardigan and shoes you could have driven a nail with, stood a small white-haired woman holding a brown paper bag.

"Penny," said Opal Pennock.

"Grandma."

She looked me over from my blazer to my shoes.

"You wore the gray one. Good. It still fits."

"I thought you were in New York."

"I was in New York for seventy-nine years. I got tired." She held up the bag. "Egg salad. I told you not to eat anything on that menu. Their soup is eleven dollars."

"Grandma, he knows."

"I heard." She nodded at the doors. "I was told by a man in a hat that you were upstairs being introduced."
