Chapter 23: The Group Order
On Thursday at six my phone buzzed on the arm of the couch.
It was a link.
I stared at it, because for four months I'd been the one who sent it.
I opened it.
It was a group order from the burrito place on Sunset, set to the usual fourteen ninety-nine, with a note from the host.
The host was Carlton.
The note said, "Come to the roof. Bring your appetite. I added a side."
I changed my shirt twice, which I never do.
Then I went up the fire escape in my socks.
The two lawn chairs were out.
Between them someone had set a card table with the bedsheet from my kitchen, and on it sat two paper plates, two burritos in foil, and a candle in a jam jar that I'd bet my own life he'd bought at a thrift store.
Carlton stood at the edge of the roof in a gray suit.
He looked terrified.
"Hi," I said.
"Hi."
"You made a group order."
"I did. I've learned from the best." He pulled out the folding chair for me, and I sat, and he sat across from me, and our knees touched. "I want to say something and I need you not to laugh."
"I won't."
"You're already smiling."
"That's my face."
He took a breath.
"Millie," he said. "When I begged you to ask for something expensive, I thought I wanted to spend on you. I was wrong. What I wanted was to be somebody you'd ask."
I put down my burrito.
"You asked for a bicycle. You asked for a second bicycle. In four months you've asked me for two things, and I'd have given you the moon." He swallowed. "There's a third thing I'd like to ask for, and I'd like to be the one asking."
