Chapter 14: What Hazel Asks

"One minute," I called, and went looking for my dress.

Torin found his shirt before I found my underwear, which I never admitted to him.

He pulled it on and went to stand behind the study door.

I opened it with my coat buttoned wrong.

Hazel stood in the corridor in pajamas and her old rain boots, holding a flashlight she didn't need.

She looked at my coat, and at the dark room behind me, and at the King's bare feet on the rug.

"Hi, Torin," she said.

"Hazel," said Torin, with great dignity.

"Is he your boyfriend?"

"Is that your question?"

"No. That's my second question."

I sat down on the top stair and pulled her in beside me.

"Ask the first one."

She kept her eyes on her boots.

"Did Dad really kill Aunt Felicity's husband?"

I had decided on the way down the hall what I would say, and I said it.

"Yes. Anders attacked him first, and Dad fought back. The Crown said it was lawful."

"Did you know?"

"No. I found out in that room with you."

"Did Dad mean to?"

"I don't know yet. He's going to tell people tomorrow, and I'll be there."

Hazel thought about it.

"Is that why he always went when she called?"

"I think so."

"It's still not a good reason to leave me," Hazel said.
