Chapter 11: The Mole

"A mole," Seo-jin said. "Under the left shoulder blade."

"That's what Ji-won said."

They stood in the chain room at dawn, with the lamp still burning and the sea going pale beyond the glass.

Si-on had told him in the hospital corridor.

He had told him again in the car, and again on the stairs, and Seo-jin had said nothing at all.

"You've touched it," Si-on said. "You did it the first night I went down your throat. You went round it like you were reading it."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because it was there," Seo-jin said.

"Seo-jin."

"I do not know yet."

The grey eyes did not leave his.

"When I do, you will hear it from me first. That is a promise. Not a term."

Si-on studied him.

He was learning to read the man in the small tells, the way he read an opponent.

What he saw was a man shutting a door on something he did not want to look at.

He let it go.

For now.

"You owe me a punishment," Seo-jin said.

"What?"

"You walked into Hong's warehouse alone," Seo-jin said. "I told you to wait for my signal. You went in the front door."

"You said you'd come in behind me."

"I said I would come when I came." Seo-jin took his jacket off and hung it on the chair. "You will lie across my knee."

Si-on laughed.

It was a short helpless sound, because the thought was so absurd, and because his skin had gone hot all over at the picture.

"You're kidding."
