Chapter 22: Burn It
The contract burned slowly, because the paper was good.
Seo-jin held it over the brazier in the garden by one corner.
The flame crept up from the bottom, across the three years and the two lines in Si-on's own hand, and ate his signature last.
It was night.
The persimmon tree stood over them with its fruit gone dark and heavy, and below the wall the sea made its long noise.
Hong Dae-seong was in a cell in Busan.
Six old captains had walked him there themselves, on a Thursday, with the folder and four years of ledgers.
Nobody on the docks had said a word against it.
Hye-ran slept in the room off the kitchen with her sewing machine, and had told Du-sik she would stay a week.
That had been six days ago.
"It is finished," Seo-jin said.
The last scrap curled and fell in the coals.
"The debt is dead. The three years are ash. You owe me nothing, and the door is open." His voice was very even. "Go anywhere."
Si-on stood with his arms folded in the firelight.
He wore Seo-jin's old black coat over bare skin, because he had come out in a hurry, and his hair was wet from the bath.
"Anywhere," he said.
"Yes."
"Even if I stay?" Si-on said.
"If you stay it must not be for the paper."
"There isn't a paper," Si-on said.
