Chapter 23: Graduation
The gymnasium of Dongsung High smelled of floor polish and cut flowers, and four hundred parents were crying into their phones.
Nam Si-on sat in the third row of the seniors in a black gown that was two sizes too big.
Under it he wore the winter jacket his mother had finished at last, in the island cottage, from the pattern she had cut in October.
It fit across the shoulders.
Under the jacket, against his chest, hung a small flat key on a black cord.
They called the Ns in the middle of the list.
"Nam Si-on."
He stood, and the hall made a noise.
His mother was on her feet in the fourth row of the parents, in a new grey coat, with her glasses pushed up in her hair.
She shouted his name in a voice that cracked the polish.
Ji-won stood beside her with new thick glasses and a faded yellow ring around one eye, whistling through two fingers.
Beside Ji-won sat a very large man in a black overcoat holding a paper bag of rice cakes.
He was crying openly into the bag.
"Sit down, Mr. Ko," the teacher on stage said.
