Chapter 24: Possession
The grey box sat on the bedside table all through the night, and Si-on did not open it.
He had promised.
At nine in the morning the sun came flat across the chain-room sheet, and the sea beyond the glass was flat and bright.
Seo-jin sat on the edge of the bed in his shirtsleeves, and held the box in both hands.
For a long time he did not speak.
"You're going to say something," Si-on said, from the pillow. "You've got the face."
"I am arranging it."
"Take your time," Si-on said.
"I have never needed so much of it."
He opened the lid.
Inside, on grey felt, lay a thin silver chain no longer than a necklace.
It had a clasp at one end, a tiny lock at the other, and one small key.
It was plain, and it was old, and it had been polished.
"I made it when I was twenty," Seo-jin said. "In the room in Gamcheon. I had a file and a jeweller's tool, and nobody to show."
"What for?"
"I did not know," Seo-jin said. "I thought if I ever owned a thing I wanted to keep, I would chain it."
