Chapter 9: Cassio's Envelopes
Cassio's POV
I left her asleep, and it was the hardest thing I had done in years.
I told myself it was business.
Her father had called at dawn and asked to meet at the Lanzetta dock office, alone.
A man who is asked that way does not decline.
The office smelled of diesel and old coffee.
Lanzetta sat behind his desk with his gray hat on the blotter and Carlo's empty chair beside him.
He did not stand.
"You've taken my daughter," he said.
"She walked out. I gave her a car."
"You gave her a bed."
I said nothing.
He got what he wanted by waiting for other people to fill the silence.
I had spent five years not filling it.
"Spring came early this year," he said. "I took your envelope at the wake. I'll want the second half now."
"There isn't a second half."
"There was always a second half."
"There was an agreement for the veto to hold. The veto didn't hold. Your daughter stood up in front of six heads and ended it herself."
"She did it with your help."
"She did it alone."
That was the truth, and it was the part I was proudest of.
Lanzetta folded his hands.
"Five springs, Rinaldi. Forty thousand each, and a favor on the Newark piers. You kept her single so Mancuso couldn't have my docks, and you've had what you paid for."
