Chapter 6: The Hallway

I didn't open the door for him.

I opened it, stepped into the hallway in my socks, and shut it behind me.

Carmine's eyebrows went up.

"You're not letting me in."

"He's asleep. You're not waking him up to meet you at midnight with whiskey on your breath."

"I had two."

"You had four. You always lean on doorframes after four."

He smiled at that.

He actually looked pleased.

"You remember."

"I remember everything, Carmine. That's my problem."

The hallway was long and empty, gold carpet, little lamps on the walls.

He leaned on the wall beside my door and loosened his tie the rest of the way.

He'd always been handsome.

He knew it.

"I've been thinking," he said. "About what you did. Going to that clinic. Doing all that alone."

"I'm sure you have."

"It was brave," he said. "I'm saying that. I'm not too proud to say it."

I waited.

"Lucia's nothing," he said softly. "You know that. She was a mistake I made because I was angry. Because we couldn't."

"Because I couldn't."

He held up his hands.

"I said things. I was wrong to say them at the table. I can say that to you here."

"Here, in an empty hallway. Not at the table."

"June."

"You won't kneel in front of your father's men. But you'll whisper sorry outside a hotel room at midnight."

He pushed off the wall.

"Come home," he said. "Bring the boy. Lucia goes. You get the house back, the car, the whole thing. He gets my name. He grows up a Corsaro. When Pop goes, he's the heir to all of it."

"And you get the chair."

"We get the chair."

I looked at him for a long time.

He meant every word.

That was the thing about Carmine.

He always meant it, right up until he didn't.

"No," I said.

He nodded slowly.

Then his face changed.

It didn't get angry.

It got flat and quiet.
