Chapter 13: Ugo's Table

I did not get into the car.

I stood on the sidewalk with my mother's enamel pot against my hip and looked at Ugo Tessari through the open window.

"Not in there," I said. "You can have a table."

"A table."

"Your restaurant, in daylight, with the back door propped open."

He laughed, softly.

"You are better than your sister," he said. "Walk, then. I'll follow."

The Cardinal was empty at four.

The chairs sat upside down on the tables, and a porter ran a mop under the red carpet's edge.

Paola's shift did not start until five, and the hostess stand was bare.

Ugo took a corner booth with his back to the wall and waved off the porter.

I sat across from him with the pot in my lap, and I kept my coat on.

"Triple," he said.

"Of what?"

"Of what Colucci pays you. Twenty-eight thousand, two hundred a month."

He knew the number to the dollar.

"You would keep the books of three of my businesses," he said. "You would have your own office, your own door and your own name on it."

"What would I do for it?"

"Count. That's all you do, isn't it?"

"I count what's on paper."
