Chapter 14: The Confession
On Sunday I sat in the chair on his right, and I did not look at him.
His mother had put me there herself, with her hand flat between my shoulder blades.
Forty people filled the long room.
The priest was there, and the old uncle across from me, and the four men in dark jackets by the door.
Three small boys sat at the far end, where Paola had sat.
Nobody had put a plate in front of that end of the table for her.
Raf came in last.
He wore the dark shirt with the collar open, and the scar on his hand showed white against his knuckles.
He did not sit.
He stood behind the head of the table with both hands on the chair back, and the room went quiet, one cousin at a time.
"I'm going to say something before anyone eats," he said.
His mother, at the stove door, folded her arms.
"In June, Pio put a hotel receipt on my desk. My girlfriend was sleeping with a man."
A fork rang on a plate.
"In August I learned the man was a banker in Cranston, and that his wife was her sister."
The old uncle across from me put down his glass.
"I said nothing. I did not tell the woman. I kept paying for the hotel."
"Raffaele," the old uncle said.
