The cafe on Thayer Street had mismatched chairs and a line of students with laptops.

I got there at nine-fifty and took the table by the window, with my back to the wall.

I had told Raf where I was going.

I had told him only that, and he had said, "Take Pio," and I had said no, and he had said, "Then call me when you sit down."

I had called him from the sidewalk and hung up before he spoke.

Paola came at ten past ten.

She wore a gray wool coat I had never seen and no lipstick, and without it her mouth looked young and chapped.

She sat across from me, and she did not take off her gloves.

"You came," she said.

"You said I'd want it."

"I said you'd want what I have."

"Then say it. I have a meeting at noon with the owner of a laundromat."

Her eyes flickered.

She had always hated it when I had somewhere better to be.

"Ugo is angry," she said. "He's angry at me because the list is gone, and he's angry at you because you walked away with it."

"I took one page."

"He says you took the whole Sunday."

"I did."

She almost smiled, and then she remembered not to.

"He's going to call a sit-down," Paola said. "With Raf's people at the table. He'll say your books are a danger to the family because you have a state license and a husband with a grudge."
