Chapter 5: Stay Dead

I didn't touch it.

I stood by the stove with the coffee pot in my hand until Rory got up and took it from me.

"She has your address," I said.

"She has my mum's. It came through my mum's." He turned the envelope over. "She'd have got that from my file at the house."

I sat down across from the box.

My card was gone. The one in my handwriting.

Nine years. Number ten comes in June.

"He said he never opened it," I said slowly. "He told me in the hospital. He told the whole church."

"I know."

"So she took it." I could see it. Serena wandering into his study in my robe, finding a silver box with a ribbon on his desk. "She found it before he did. She opened it. She knew I was pregnant at the party, and he didn't."

Rory didn't say anything.

"He didn't know," I said again.

I didn't know why I needed that to be true.

Maybe because nine years is a long time to have been married to a man who could watch.

Rory closed the lid of the box with one finger.

"Do you want me to get rid of it?"

"No." I took it and put it in the pocket of my apron. "It's mine."

That afternoon Jess called me out from the kitchen.

She had her phone propped against the sugar jar and her face was furious.

"Is this her? Rory said blonde and evil."

It was a live video. Two thousand people watching.

Serena stood in the middle of a long, dim room with flour sacks stacked against one wall.
