Chapter 23: What He Owes
"Understood," Emanuele said.
He crossed the white cloth between the families in the same slow steps he had used on the first night, and nobody breathed.
He stopped at the foot of my father's chair.
Then he went down on one knee on the stained carpet, with his arm strapped across his chest, and I watched what it cost him.
His face went grey.
He did not make a sound.
"Get up," I said.
"No."
"You'll tear your stitches."
"They're yours. Tear them if you like."
Behind him, forty Cortese men stared at the back of their don's head.
Bruna had pressed her knuckles to her mouth.
"I swore on my father's grave to a man who wasn't my father," Emanuele said, loud enough for the back wall. "I used that oath to lie to the woman I meant to marry."
"I am not asking her to forgive that here."
"I won't excuse it. I won't say I had to."
He reached into his vest with the good hand and drew out a heavy gold ring, worn thin at the edges.
"My father's signet," he said. "The Cortese seat is his, and mine."
"From today the Cortese answer to the Montalto don's word on every matter that touches the peace. If I break it, the seat is yours to take."
He held it up in his palm.
