Chapter 22: The Deed

I found him at the long table in the firehouse, signing his name.

A notary in a tweed jacket sat across from him with a stamp.

Maeve stood behind her brother with both fists in her apron and her face blotchy from crying.

Camilla's brother sat at the end of the bench with a bowl of Maeve's soup and a spoon in his fist.

He looked up and waved at me, delighted.

"Helena! I live here now! I have a room with a window!"

"I know," I said. "I'm glad."

I walked down the length of the table to Cillian.

He put the pen down.

"You pleaded without telling me," I said.

"I did."

"You asked for the full sentence."

"I did."

"I told a judge this morning that I wanted you alive to testify."

"Then a prosecutor told me you had already asked for eighteen months."

"It's mine to pay," he said. "It was never yours to decide."

"You don't get to decide that either."

He met my eyes, and he did not look away.

"Read it," he said, and he turned the papers around.

It was a deed, four pages long and stamped twice.

The Red Hook firehouse, with its engine bay and its long table, passed in full to Maeve Dunne.

She would run it as a community kitchen and a free clinic for the neighborhood.

A separate page sent his savings to a fund for one young man who would never have to go back to his father's house.

I looked at the brother, who was humming over his soup.

"And the truck?"

"Sold this morning," Cillian said. "Eleven thousand dollars. It's in the fund."
