Chapter 6: Incompetent
I walked out to the gate myself.
Cillian stepped to my left without being asked, and Maeve came with her ladle.
Behind us, a dozen of Cillian's men had come out of the bay in their shirtsleeves.
Across the street, neighbors had come out on their stoops to see what the noise was.
At the bars stood a man in a good overcoat, a deputy in a tan uniform and Damian's family doctor.
The doctor held a leather folder against his chest.
"Mrs. Keane," he said, loudly and slowly, as if I were a child. "We're here because we're worried about you."
"Doctor," I said.
He jumped.
Even with a voice scraped raw, every person on the pavement heard me.
"I can hear you. You don't have to shout."
The deputy's eyebrows went up.
"Ma'am, this order says you can't speak, hear or see."
"May I read it?"
Cillian took the paper from the doctor's folder and held it close to my left side.
I read the first page out loud, one slow line at a time.
"The undersigned physician examined Helena Ashworth Keane on March fourth. She is unable to communicate in any form. She cannot understand a question."
I looked up.
"Doctor, you examined me on March fourth?"
He swallowed.
"Yes. In your home."
"I was in a clinic in Zurich on March fourth. I was in a clinic in Zurich from February until the end of April."
"My husband flew over every other weekend. You can call the clinic. They keep a signed log."
The doctor went the color of old paper.
"I may have the date wrong."
