Chapter 16: Twenty-Two Seconds
I saw Renata's chin dip, once, a tiny nod across the table.
The man behind Luciano's back thumbed the hammer.
I tore my arm out of a guard's grip and ran.
I did not run away from the gun.
I ran into the line of it, and put my back against Luciano's chest.
"Not in this room," I said.
"Not before you hear her."
"Mara," Luciano said low, into my hair.
"Left pocket."
His jacket hung open.
I slid my hand inside the left side and closed it on something flat and cold.
It was Lila's tablet.
He had walked into the Corvi house unarmed, and he had brought my sister with him.
"Silvio," I said.
"Your accountant has a speaker on that sideboard.
"Plug this in.
"Then tell your man to put the gun down, and listen to this recording, and shoot me afterward if you still want to."
Silvio lifted two fingers.
The man with the pistol lowered it an inch.
