Chapter 20: The Grave
I did not go for the phone.
I knew what the sender wanted, and I had no intention of handing it to her.
I went to the kitchen counter and picked up the chip.
It was small enough to lose under a fingernail.
I laid Lila's bracelet on the table, turned the plate over, and found the hollow behind it.
The chip fit.
I snapped the plate shut and fastened the bracelet around my wrist.
It was my choice, and I made it knowing exactly what it was.
I wanted to be found, if it came to that.
I put my father's revolver in my coat, where it had gone the first night.
Then I called nobody, and I drove to the cemetery alone.
It was past one in the morning when I reached it.
The gates were chained.
A section of the fence on the far side had been cut and pulled back.
