Chapter 12: Bruno Down
Bruno was shot at ten past seven, on the gravel in front of the house, getting into his car.
The sound was a flat crack from somewhere beyond the wall.
Bruno dropped against the door with his hand on his shoulder, swearing in a steady stream.
Vittorio was on him in seconds, hauling him behind the car, and Silvio dragged the guards in behind them.
A van pulled away down the hill with its side door open.
By nine the house doctor had dug the bullet out on the library table and said Bruno would live and complain about it.
By ten the guards had checked every wall.
Silvio stood in the study doorway with blood dried on his cuffs, and Vittorio crossed the room to him and took his hands.
"Rizzo?"
"Ottavio's friends, I think. Or Dario. It doesn't matter." Vittorio looked down at the blood. "It was meant for me."
"It missed."
"It hit Bruno."
Silvio held on to him.
After a minute Vittorio let go and walked to the desk.
He took an envelope from the top drawer and held it out.
