Chapter 17: The Tattoo
Neither of them slept.
At three in the morning Silvio lay with his head on Vittorio's chest and listened to a heartbeat that would not slow down.
Gianna was asleep two doors away, with a guard in the hall and the doctor's sedative in her blood.
Dario Rizzo was somewhere in the city with an old man's seal in his pocket.
None of it was in this room.
In this room there was a wide bed, a banked fire, and a husband who still would not quite let him go.
"Show me your ribs," Silvio said.
"What?"
"You keep your left arm clamped down. In the bath you stayed behind me. Every time, the light goes out first."
"That isn't true."
"Vittorio."
Vittorio lay very still.
On the left side of his ribs, under his arm, was a square of white surgical tape the size of a playing card.
Silvio had noticed it the first night and taken it for a cut that was healing.
He had noticed it again in the bath and let it go.
Now he laid two fingers on its edge.
"Is it a cut?"
"No."
"Then what?"
