Chapter 19: The Docks
"You knew," Silvio said.
They were in the study with the door shut and the page lying open on the desk between them.
Vittorio stood at the window with his back to the room.
"I knew."
"Since when?"
"Since I was nineteen. My father kept a copy in the safe. Page four, in your father's handwriting."
"The docks go to the Sartori heir through the husband." Silvio heard his voice go thin. "So this was the prize."
"No."
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I knew how it would look." Vittorio turned around. "It looks like I married you to take your family's docks."
"It does look like that!"
"I have never touched them. Not one crate. Ask Bruno."
"Bruno would say anything you told him."
"Then ask the ledger," Vittorio said, quietly. "You have the Ferrante books."
"Look for a single payment to a Sartori account from Fox Point since Saturday."
Silvio looked at him.
He did not need to look at the ledger, and both of them knew it.
He had read every line of those books before he ever walked into this house, and nothing had moved except the figures Ottavio stole.
