Chapter 21: Take Me With You
The surgeon came out at two in the morning with blood on her sleeve and gave Silvio what he needed to hear.
"He'll live. Barely."
The bullet had gone through the left side and nicked the bowel.
It had also missed the kidney by the width of a thumb.
Silvio sat down on the waiting room floor because his knees decided it for him.
Gianna sat next to him and took his hand, and neither of them said anything for a long time.
At three, Bruno came in with his arm in its sling and a face the color of putty.
Behind him came the capos, one by one, dark coats damp with rain.
They stood in the corridor and looked at Silvio, still in his undershirt, with Vittorio's blood dried to his elbows.
The oldest capo spoke first.
"The boss is down. The house needs someone to speak for it."
"There's Bruno," Silvio said.
"Bruno's hurt. And you're the boss's husband, whatever else you are."
It was not quite respect.
It was a test, and Silvio knew it.
He stood up.
"The Table room," he said. "Ten minutes."
The east wing was cold.
Silvio did not sit at the head of the oak table.
He stood at its corner, one hand resting on the wood, beside the chair Vittorio always used.
