Chapter 22: Cora's Price
They lowered the Marigold into Cook Inlet with a crane at noon, and Gus sang to her the whole way down.
I stood on the Port of Alaska dock in my parka with my arms wrapped around myself.
Ansel was on the next pier, hauling mooring lines for a freighter, and he had not looked over once.
He knew I was watching, and I knew he knew.
"She floats," said Gus, from the stern, in a voice of deep satisfaction. "Of course she floats. Your daddy built her to float through anything."
"You drove her five thousand miles."
"Nine days. Four breakdowns. One moose."
"A moose?"
"Don't ask the moose."
Behind me, a taxi door slammed.
I turned.
Cora stood at the end of the dock with one suitcase and a gray wool coat that was too thin for the weather.
Her nose was red from cold.
She looked small, and older than thirty-one, and afraid.
"I told you I'd be here by the end of next week," she said. "It's eleven days."
"I can count."
"I'll go if you say so."
"You flew five thousand miles."
