Pavel did not look away.
I will give him that, because he could have.
He stood in Margit's shop in the brass light, with a lawyer at his elbow.
He looked at the three of us in our untidy order.
I had pulled a cardigan off a chair.
Matt had his shirt back on, buttoned wrong.
He was standing a little in front of me.
"Shut the door," Pavel said to the lawyer, who did.
He took off his reading glasses and let them hang on their cord.
"Ms. Kallio," he said.
"I told you at the gate that I didn't trust you.
"I'd like to say something about that."
"Say it," I said.
"I read your father's page the night the payroll list came across my desk," Pavel said.
"I read it and I put it back.
"I told my cousin that you were a girl who'd walked a family into trouble.
"I said that to your face.
"I should have said it to myself."
I stood very straight.
I did not say it was all right.
"I'm sorry," Pavel said.
"You found out your father had been murdered, and I treated you as a threat.
"I never asked what it had cost you.
"I'm asking now, if you'll tell me."
