Chapter 7: Where May I Look

Margit's cousin owned a sauna on a bluff over the lake, a log building with a tin chimney and a path trodden through the snow.

Margit had dragged me there on a Wednesday afternoon, because she said a woman who lives on coffee and fear needs to sweat.

I had not known that Matt Ravnik would be there.

I had not known, until I opened the door in a towel, that Margit's cousin was one of four old Finnish women on the lower bench who had known him since he was a boy.

They looked at me.

They looked at the man on the top bench.

Then all four of them looked very hard at the wall.

He sat at the far end of the highest bench, in a white towel around his waist, with his elbows on his knees and his head bowed.

His back was broad and scarred across one shoulder.

The steam rolled off the stones in a long slow breath.

He lifted his head when the door shut, and I watched him see me.

He did not stand.

He looked at my face, and only my face, and then he lowered his eyes to the floorboards as if I had told him to.
