Chapter 19: After Hours

Tobias reached her before the bell above the door stopped shaking.

He put both hands on her face and kissed her hard.

Virginia took his coat by the lapels and walked him backward until his hips hit the counter.

"The rule," he said against her mouth. "No touching."

"The rule is dead."

"Who killed it?"

"We did. In a coat room."

He laughed, low and rough, and the sound went down her spine.

She pulled his sweater up over his head and dropped it on the register.

His chest was warm, and she put her palms flat on it and felt his heart going hard.

"Ginny," he said. "Not here. Your father's shop."

"My father's shop," she said, and unbuckled his belt, "is where you first kissed me."

"On the ladder."

"On the ladder. I was eighteen, and you were twenty, and you couldn't get the words out."

"I got them out."

"You said, I'm going to kiss you now, and then you fell off the ladder."

"I did not fall."

"You sat down fast," she said, and he picked her up by the waist and set her on the counter.

She spread her knees, and he stepped between them.

He pushed her skirt up around her hips and slid his hands under her until he had her bare thighs in his palms.

She felt the cool wood through her underwear and his heat against it.

He kissed her neck, her collarbone, the hollow between her breasts through her blouse.

She undid the buttons herself, because she couldn't wait.

He pulled the cups of her bra down and took her nipple into his mouth.
