Chapter 9: The Wing
The east wing of the Hartfield Row infirmary had no roof.
Lucan climbed out of the Marshal's car into a courtyard full of dust and stretchers.
Doctors ran between the rubble and the door.
A row of patients sat in blankets on the cobbles. A woman was carrying a child out of a window on the second floor.
Garrick was already out of the car.
"Stay behind me," he said.
"I'm not helpless."
"I know. Stay behind me anyway."
In the middle of the yard Perrin lay strapped to a gurney with four medics holding the straps.
His back was arched off the pad.
Every glass window around the courtyard hummed, and the cobbles under the gurney had cracked in a star.
Ansel sat on a bench ten feet away with his head down.
Blood ran from his nose onto his gray coat.
His hands hung loose between his knees. He had given everything he had and it had not been enough.
Three press drones hovered at the gate. The infirmary guards had stopped trying to wave them off.
Perrin's head turned.
His eyes found Lucan's.
"Luc," he said. The whole yard heard it. "Luc, please."
"Don't," Garrick said quietly.
"I'm going to listen," Lucan said. "That's all."
He walked to the gurney.
Perrin's bloodshot eyes filled up, and tears ran down into his hair.
"Please settle me," he said. "I'll do anything. I'm so sorry. It's never been the same since you left. Ansel can't hold it. Ansel never could."
On the bench, Ansel lifted his head.
Nobody in the yard moved.
"I made a mistake," Perrin said. "I'll end the marriage. I'll go to the Bureau myself and say it was wrong. Just come back. I can't live without you."
