Chapter 24: The Letter
"I'm not dying," Corvin said, offended.
"You're talking to your mother."
"Once. Briefly." He shut his eyes. "Was that a no?"
"It was a not now."
"I'll take it."
His men came back up through the crack with snow to their waists.
We lashed him to the long sled with every strap in the cave.
I went down ahead of them on four legs again, the whole way, because I didn't trust anybody else to find the road.
We reached the gate a little before dawn.
Agnes was still standing in the hall window. I don't think she'd moved.
The traders and the little girl were already asleep by the kitchen fire in a heap of blankets.
The fever broke on the third day.
His leg knit in eight.
They were the worst eight days of my life, because Corvin Ravenscar was the worst patient in the history of the Greywold.
On the second day he tried to get up to check the mill.
"The mill is fine," I said, and pushed him back down with one hand.
On the third day he tried to get up to check the barracks.
"The barracks are fine."
On the fourth day he tried to get up because he was bored.
I sat on him.
"You're not supposed to sit on a sick man," he said from underneath me.
"You're not supposed to be a sick man who walks around on a broken leg."
