Chapter 11: The Door Off Its Hinges
I locked myself in the bathroom off the corner room and ran the bath so hot the mirror went white.
I didn't get in.
I sat on the edge of the clawfoot tub with my arms around my knees and listened to the water roar.
The room was small and tiled in old green and white, with a window painted shut, and the door had a brass bolt that a housekeeper had once been proud of.
I had thrown it.
I heard his step in the bedroom.
I heard it stop outside the bathroom door.
"Grace," he said.
"Go away," I said.
"The door's bolted," he said.
"I know it is," I said.
"I bolted it."
He was quiet.
"Open it," he said.
"No," I said.
"Then tell me through it," he said.
I looked at the white steam on the glass.
"You left a man on my door," I said.
"One of them put my captain in a hospital bed with a wire in his jaw, and you stood in the room and said you couldn't prove it.
"You said I was safe.
"You said you'd be in the house.
"You told me every touch was mine to start, and then you let him watch my window."
"Yes," he said.
"Don't say yes!" I said.
"Say something else."
"I can't," he said.
"That's the worst thing you could say," I said.
"I know," he said.
I pressed the heels of my hands into my eyes.
"You can't leave the property without me," I said.
"That's what you told me the first night.
"That was your one rule.
"Well, I'm off it.
"I'm off the property, Rocco, I'm in a locked room, and you can't reach me.
