Chapter 7: Family Money
On Monday morning I rolled gnocchi in Rosaria's kitchen with flour to my elbows, and I was not thinking about the study at all.
I was thinking about it every second.
The old woman had gone to Mass with her driver.
The housekeeper had gone to the market.
The big house ticked and settled around me, and my wrists ached pleasantly where I'd gripped the edge of the desk.
I pressed a fork into a little pillow of dough and thought, he said please.
I thought, he said it twice.
"Miss Delmonico."
I didn't jump.
I finished the ridge on the gnocco and set it on the tray.
Vincent stood in the kitchen doorway in a charcoal overcoat, with his hands in his pockets and a paper bag from a bakery on Atwells.
"Cannoli," he said, and set the bag on the counter.
"Rosaria likes the ones with pistachio.
"I thought you might too."
"I'm all right."
"No, you're not.
"You're a girl in a strange house with a man who took you off a boat.
"Nobody's all right."
He pulled out a stool and sat across the counter from me.
