Chapter 10: Frank
Frank Cullinane was sitting on my husband's stool at the corner of the bar with a glass of Jameson in front of him.
Six of his men stood behind him in their work jackets.
Fifty regulars filled Cullinane's on a Friday night, and none of them were drinking.
I walked in from the kitchen with my sleeves still pushed up and my apron on.
Marek came in behind me, and I turned and put my hand flat on his chest.
"The door," I said. "Stay at the door."
His jaw worked.
He looked at me for a long moment.
Then he stepped back and put his shoulders against the doorframe, where the whole room could see him.
I went the rest of the way alone.
"Kathleen," Frank said softly, in the voice he used on women. "You've been busy. Receipts."
"Held for the chair, Frank. It says so right on the paper."
"I know what it says." He stood. "I came to see how my nephew's wife is getting along."
He put out his hand.
I did not take it.
