Chapter 10: The Courier
On the ninth day of the heat, I woke before dawn in the hay loft with my wolf already standing up.
Lucan was asleep on the top rung of the ladder with his chin on his chest.
He had not touched me again.
He had brought water, and cold cloths, and bread from Kari's kitchen, and he had slept on a ladder for nine nights.
I looked at him for a moment longer than I should have.
Then my wolf lifted her head, and I smelled lavender.
It was faint, and it was on the cold air coming through the loft door.
It was Ilse's oil.
It was also very early.
I slid out of the quilt and went down past Lucan without waking him.
Halfway across the yard, in the open dark, I let the white come.
The scent was north of the stable and moving fast.
I ran.
The ground was wet and the creek was loud, and I put my nose to the ridge path and followed the lavender with another smell under it, a young man's smell, sweat and nerves and the leather of a patrol pack.
He was running too.
I caught him at the creek crossing.
He was a patrol wolf of twenty-two or twenty-three, and he had a folded square of paper in his fist and the face of someone who knew he was carrying something he shouldn't.
I came out of the willows in front of him.
He skidded in the mud, and his eyes went wide.
I did not growl.
I didn't have to.
He went down in the mud on his belly, shaking, with his hands over his head.
"I didn't do anything," he said. "Luna. Moon, I mean, whatever you want me to say. She asked me for a favor. She healed my mother."
