Chapter 20: Aldo

Matteo's POV

Salvatore turned around in the hospital corridor, and he looked at me.

He had one arm in a bandage and the other held at his side.

For the first time in nine years, I saw his whole face with no table between us.

"I wondered when," he said.

"You knew I'd bring it."

"I knew it would be you. I didn't know it would be today."

There was a stairwell door behind me. I opened it and went through, and he followed me into the concrete cold.

It was quiet there, and the light was bad.

I had a pistol in my coat. I'd carried it to that building every day for a week.

"Tell me about the kitchen," I said.

"I wasn't in the kitchen."

"Tell me who gave the order."

"I did."

I had imagined hearing that word for nine years.

He said it quietly, and then he cleared his throat.

"Your father and I had a war over the union local," Salvatore said. "He called me a name at a funeral, in front of my men. I went home angry, and I said the thing in my study that night. The next morning I tried to take it back."

"Not hard enough."

"No. The man I told had already gone."

I took the pistol out and held it down by my leg.

He looked at it, and he didn't step back.

"You're entitled," he said. "I'd ask you to wait a few weeks, that's all. She needs what's in my arms to take. After that, do it where you like."
