Chapter 22: The Commission
The Commission gave its verdict nine days later, in the back room of Moretti's Table.
Matteo chose the place. He said it was the one room in Chicago where Salvatore couldn't pretend he was still the host.
I sat beside Matteo at the long table with my cap on and a plate of Fiorenza's biscuits in front of me.
Five men sat across from us in a row, the heads of the five families, with the envoys at either end.
Salvatore stood alone in the middle of the floor, with his arms at his sides.
Behind him stood his underboss and a dozen of his men. None of them had a weapon, because the envoys had asked them to leave their coats at the door.
"Salvatore Moretti," the thin envoy said. "You have given us a statement."
"I have."
"Say it again, so the room can hear."
My father turned toward Matteo.
"Nine years ago I gave the order that killed your father, Aldo Ravello," he said. "He had not wronged me enough to die of it. I was angry, and I was proud, and I let a man carry my pride to his kitchen."
Nobody in the room made a sound.
"I took a peace from you, and I bought it with a daughter. I didn't know she was mine. That's no excuse. I should have known her."
His voice was steady.
"I resign my seat at this table. I ask the Commission to take the Moretti name off the union local and the parking, and give them where it sees fit."
"You ask to be spared?" the gray envoy said.
"No."
The gray man looked at the five at the table, and the five looked at Matteo.
"It is the Ravello house that was wronged," the thin envoy said. "What does the Ravello house say?"
Matteo stood.
He had told me beforehand what he'd say. I had told him he could change his mind.
