Chapter 23: The Recliner
Darius's POV
My grandfather sat in that recliner for forty-one years, and in all that time he never once got up from a table and left.
It was brown leather, worn soft and cracked along both arms, with a lever on the right side that stuck.
Tavon and I had carried it up my mother's steps and down again that morning.
We carried it up the narrow stairs in Smyrna next and set it in the corner of the loft.
Amber stood in the doorway with her arms crossed and her head tilted.
"It's ugly," she said.
"It's the best chair in Georgia."
"It smells like a church basement," she said.
"It smells like my grandfather."
She came in and put her hand on the leather where his head had worn it pale.
"Then I like it," she said.
She locked the loft door behind her.
I had noticed she did that more now. She did it with a little smile.
"Sit," she said. "I want to try it."
I sat.
The recliner took my weight with a groan of springs and held it.
She stood in front of me in her gray sweater and nothing under it that I could see.
She pulled the sweater up and over her head.
Her hair was in the claw clip, and her skin was pale in the lamp from the hall.
She dropped the sweater.
I looked at her, and I thought, I am going to remember this when I am eighty.
"Take it all off," she said. "Everything, Darius."
I stood up, undressed, and sat back down.
She watched me do it with her lip between her teeth.
When I was bare in my grandfather's chair, she knelt between my knees on the old rug and took me in both hands.
She worked her fists up and down, slow, twisting a little at the top, and her eyes came up to mine.
