Chapter 9: The Truck Bay
The yard behind Dependable Movers of Smyrna was gravel and chain link, with six trucks parked nose to tail under one sodium light.
Darius had texted me at 5:40: Done at six. Come by if you want to see the truck.
I wanted to see the truck.
I parked the CR-V beside the fence and walked across the gravel in my scrubs, with my badge still clipped to my pocket.
He was waiting at the back of the twenty-six-footer with the roll-up door lifted a foot off the bumper.
"Hi," he said.
"Hi," I said.
"You came straight from work."
"I had a cleaning at three that bit me. I smell like mint."
He smiled, and the gap in his teeth showed.
I looked at the dark slot under the door.
"Is that where my boxes rode?" I said.
"Yes, ma'am. Ninth from the left, on the wall."
"Show me."
He bent and pushed the door up another two feet.
I ducked under it.
The cargo bay was a long steel room that smelled of cardboard and old rubber, lit by a single caged bulb.
Stacks of folded moving blankets lay along the side wall, and straps hung in loops from the rails.
