Chapter 4: Neither

I came down the stairs slowly.

I was barefoot, in a T-shirt, with my hair still damp from the shower.

I didn't hurry.

"Neither," I said.

Blake laughed.

"Neither isn't one of the choices, Margot."

"I'm not leaving my house. And she's not staying in it."

"Says who?"

I stopped on the bottom step, which put my eyes level with his.

"Says the January payroll," I said. "Bell, Harper. Executive Assistant to the CEO. Sixteen thousand dollars a month."

The hall was very quiet.

Harper let go of his sleeve.

"I wonder if your board knows your assistant lives in your guest room," I said. "I wonder if they know what she assists with."

Blake's face didn't move.

That was how I knew I'd hit something.

When Blake was annoyed, he talked. When he was scared, he went still.

"You've been in my accounts," he said.

"I was looking for the diaper money."

"That's a crime."

"It's a shared computer in a shared house, bought in both our names." I tilted my head. "You use our wedding date backward for every password, Blake. With an exclamation point."

Harper made a small sound.

"You said she didn't know anything," she whispered.

"Harper," Blake said, without looking at her. "Go back to the hotel."

"What?"

"The room's still booked. Go."

"You said I was family!"

"I said go."

She stared at him.

Then she stared at me.

I had seen that face before.

Junior year, when I got the internship she'd applied for too.

She grabbed the handle of her suitcase and dragged it back out the door.
