Chapter 23: Two Dads
By dawn the last photographer had gone, and the front steps of the house were empty.
Conrad was sitting on the top one, still in his black tie, with his jacket on his knees.
Valen and I sat down on either side of him.
Nobody said anything for a while.
The lake was gray and flat, and a single heron stood in the shallows.
"The lawyer called me at five," Conrad said finally. "He is dropping Odette as a client. He has returned the trust file to the bank.
"The police have her statement. She will not be back in this house."
"Good," Valen said.
"It isn't enough."
"No."
Conrad took an envelope from inside his jacket and put it in Valen's hand.
"This is the deed to the house," he said.
Valen stared at it.
"Con..."
"It's yours. The main house, the east wing, the lawn, the dock. Mother witnessed the signature at midnight.
"Posy's room is in it, and her school is ten minutes away, and you will be there when she wakes up.
