Chapter 16: Tie
Kyle came to my door on Halloween Friday in bib overalls, a flannel shirt and a straw hat.
A green silk tie hung out of the front pocket.
"I'm a farmer," he said.
"You are a farmer."
"The whole floor said it was the best costume in underwriting," he said.
"The whole floor was right."
I had gone to work as a claims adjuster, which got a laugh from nobody.
Dawn had come as a cat and had spent the day sitting on my desk and licking her wrist.
I took the hat off his head.
I took the tie out of his pocket, and pulled him up the stairs by the bib.
"What are you going to do with that?" he said.
"What do you think?"
In my bedroom I peeled the flannel off his shoulders and unhooked the overalls.
He stood there in his boots and his underwear with his hands at his sides.
His chest still carried the mark I had left under the collarbone, gone yellow at the edges.
On his neck, above where the shirt had been, the bite from the week before had faded to the brown of an old bruise.
I had looked at it every day for ten days.
"On the bed," I said. "On your back."
