Chapter 18: Wahoo
The Janssen farmhouse sat at the end of a mile of gravel outside Wahoo, white with a green roof.
The corn in the fields around it had all been picked.
A brown dog came off the porch before I had the car door open.
"That's the dog," Kyle said.
"I gathered."
His mother was standing in the kitchen door with a dish towel on her shoulder.
She was a broad, weathered woman in her fifties, with Kyle's blue eyes and a gray braid down her back.
His father stood behind her in the hall, even taller than Kyle, in a clean flannel shirt that had been ironed that morning.
I had a pie in my hands, my mother's apricot, and a stomach that would not settle.
"Mom, Dad," Kyle said. "This is Renee. My girlfriend. She's thirty-two."
His father looked at him.
Then he looked at me, and I held the pie like a shield.
"Well," his father said. "You're taller than he said on the phone."
"I'm very happy to meet you," I said.
"Kolaches?" his mother said.
"Apricot pie."
"My grandmother was a Vavra," his mother said. "From outside Wilber. You'd know that name."
