Chapter 20: Under the Desk

Renee's POV

Since the first of December I had an office with a door.

It was small, and it had a window on the corridor with a blind I kept half down.

A desk the size of a door that I had asked for because of the knee room.

At two on Wednesday I had a client on speaker and a legal pad, and the door was shut.

"Now, dear, the water came in at the corner," the voice said, cracked and cheerful. "Right where my husband hung the picture of the barn."

"I understand, ma'am," I said.

The door opened.

Kyle came in with a manila folder under his arm, shut it behind him, and turned the lock.

He looked at me.

He looked at the phone on the desk, with its red light and its running timer, and his whole face lit.

I shook my head at him.

He put a finger to his lips, set the folder on my blotter, and got down on his knees.

"Ma'am, can you tell me which wall?" I said.

"The north one. Or the east. It's the one by the radiator."

Kyle slid under my desk on his elbows.

His shoulders came between my knees.

I felt his big hands settle on my thighs, and push my skirt up with a slowness that was a threat.

I kept my pen on the pad.

I wrote: north or east, radiator.

"And how long ago did you first see it?" I said.
