Chapter 5: Glass
At 6:10 on Thursday I booked the glass conference room under my own name for a meeting with no one in it.
Then I sat on the long table in my pencil skirt with the blinds half drawn, and waited for the one person I'd invited.
The room was all glass on the corridor side.
The blinds were open a foot at the bottom, and through the gap I could see the carpet, the elevator bank at the far end.
A vacuum cleaner humming two rooms down.
Kyle came in and shut the door and stood against it.
"Six-ten," he said. "I checked."
"Lock it."
He turned the lock.
"Come here."
He crossed the room in three steps, and I caught him by his tie and held him at arm's length.
"The rule is quiet," I said. "Anywhere with a window, we are quiet. Tell me you understand."
"I understand," he said.
"And you do what I say," I said.
"Yes, ma'am."
I should have corrected him.
I looked at that big, serious face, and the flush climbing his neck, and what came out was: "Say it again."
"Yes, ma'am."
I let go of his tie.
I leaned back on my hands on the cold table, and crossed my ankles, and said, "On your knees."
He went down.
He did it so fast that I heard his knees hit the carpet, and I felt it in my belly.
He pushed my skirt up my thighs with both hands, slowly, and bared the tops of my stockings.
Then he put his lips against the inside of my left thigh, an inch above the knee, and stopped.
"Here," he said. "I want this one here."
"No marks anyone can see."
"Nobody sees here."
He kissed his way up, slow, and each kiss was a promise.
The elevator bell dinged at the end of the hall.
I went rigid.
I turned my head and watched through the gap in the blinds.
A man in a reflective vest stepped out with a mop bucket, looked at nothing, and went the other way.
Kyle's mouth never left my skin.
"Eyes on the corridor," he murmured. "I've got the rest."
He pushed my underwear aside with two fingers and set his mouth on me.
I put my hand over my own mouth.
I kept one eye on the glass, and let the other close.
His tongue went slowly up and around and I felt my whole body tilt toward him.
He held my hips down on the table.
He did not need to.
I couldn't have moved.
