Chapter 7: Chili
The third-floor chili cook-off started at noon on Wednesday, and by 12:30 I had not been touched in five days.
Nobody had said a word about the shelves, and I had spent the morning checking every face on three for the man who said huh.
Two folding tables ran down the middle of the break room, loaded with crockpots, plastic spoons, and sixteen kinds of chili.
The whole floor stood around them holding paper bowls.
The vice president of claims climbed on a chair with a cup of beer-cheese chili and gave a speech about team spirit.
I stood at the back with a bowl I hadn't tasted.
Across the room, Kyle stood against the wall by the sink with his sleeves rolled and a spoon in his mouth.
He looked at me over the spoon.
He had spent five days being exactly what I'd asked, polite and distant and Janssen, and I had spent five days hating it.
I had a bruise on my ribs from Friday that I touched in the shower.
"Hearty chili," the vice president said. "That's what built this company."
