Chapter 10: The Kitchen Sink
At nine that night he stood in my kitchen doorway, and he unzipped his jeans to prove it.
He was not wearing anything underneath.
I was at the sink in a thin cotton nightgown, rinsing a wineglass, and I looked at him over my shoulder.
"You were listening," I said.
"Everybody on the court was listening," he said.
"And you came anyway."
"You said tonight," he said.
The window over the sink was open.
It is a wide window with a screen.
It faces the side yard, straight across to the kitchen window of his house, forty feet of dark lawn away.
Outside, my sprinkler ticked around on its timer, and the air that came in smelled of wet grass and hot asphalt.
Every light in my kitchen was off except the little one under the cabinet.
I turned the water off.
I dried my hands on the dish towel, slowly, and I put the towel on the counter.
"Take them off," I said.
He pushed the jeans down and stepped out of them.
He stood there in my kitchen in the glow of the cabinet light, completely naked and fully hard.
I had never seen a more beautiful thing in that room.
I opened the drawer next to the stove, the one with the takeout menus, and took out the purple vibrator.
I had moved it there that afternoon.
I held it out to him across the counter.
"You know what this is."
He took it.
He turned it over in his hand, a little shyly, and his ears went pink.
"I've seen one," he said.
"Have you used one?" I said.
"On somebody? No."
"Then I'm going to teach you," I said.
