Chapter 11: The Letter

"Make the coffee," I said, into his chest.

"Yes, ma'am."

"I'm going to throw the mug at you."

He kissed the top of my head.

He got up off my kitchen floor naked and made the coffee, and I watched every move he made.

On Monday, Marlene was on my porch at ten in the morning with a manila envelope.

It was Memorial Day, and the court was already hung with flags, and somebody down the street had a radio on.

She did not ring the bell.

She stood on my welcome mat in a red-white-and-blue visor with the envelope held in both hands.

I opened the door in my robe with a cup in my hand.

"Second notice," Marlene said. "Hand-delivered, since the first one didn't take."

"How kind," I said.

"There's a petition inside, with four signatures from residents who have, shall we say, been disturbed."

"Four," I said.

"Four households."

"Out of how many?" I said.

"Out of the households that were home," said Marlene.

"The association will hear the matter at the block party on the sixth," she said. "You asked for it, so you have it."

She held it out.

I took it.

She looked at me for a moment with her small, pale, certain eyes.

For just a second I thought she was going to say something else.
