Chapter 24: The Window
Tyler sent me a picture of the sticky note on Monday morning, with no caption.
By Saturday, the code had opened my garage door six nights out of seven.
The Toro handle had a row of four more yellow notes on it that said things like "Bring the good pillow" and "Wear the green thing."
The Fourth of July fell on a Saturday that year.
The whole of Sandpiper Court came out to the street at dusk with lawn chairs and coolers, and a child's wagon full of sparklers.
Somebody had hung a flag from the maple at the bend, and a speaker on a porch rail played marches and old rock songs.
Fireflies rose off the grass by the hundreds.
Tyler and I sat on my front porch swing with a bowl of cherries between us.
I had cut the lawn that morning, edge to edge, in stripes, and it lay green and gold in the last of the light.
"You've got a seed in your teeth," I told him.
"Where?"
"There. No. Come here."
I picked it out with my thumbnail, in front of the whole street, and nobody gave it a second look.
The woman in the running tights waved from her chair, and I waved back.
The man with the dog sat on his curb with the dog between his knees, murmuring in the dog's ear that the booms were friends.
The retired teacher lit a sparkler for the toddler in the sunhat, the one who had torn up the petition.
The toddler held it out at arm's length and stared at it.
His mother stood behind him with both hands ready.
"Careful, careful," she called. "You tore up a petition. You can hold fire."
Everyone laughed.
